Former NHL player Ilya Kovalchuk will serve as the general manager of the Russian Olympic Committee’s hockey team at the Beijing Games, the ROC said on Monday. Kovalchuk, who played 926 NHL games with five teams after being selected No. 1 in the 2001 draft, has no previous managerial experience.
Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin, Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov and goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy were the first three players chosen for the ROC roster.
